Markdown with a formal identity — and a registration that admits the format's central problem by defining a variant parameter (CommonMark, GFM, and friends), because no two renderers agree on the edge cases. Unusually, the charset parameter is required rather than defaulted, so the full label is text/markdown; charset=utf-8. In practice most servers still ship .md files as text/plain, and most consumers never notice.
